Van Lear Church, School, and Hotel, around 1915

Three important buildings in the Johnson County coal camp of Van Lear are shown in this post card view from about eighty-five years ago.

At left is the church; in the center is the Van Lear School; and at right is the hotel.

Van Lear was one of Kentucky's largest coal camps for many years. Just up the road is Butcher Hollow, childhood home of singer Loretta Lynn.
