Letters To The Editor

Each month, The Kentucky Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from our faithful readers. Whenever possible, we try to publish as many of them as possible in the 12 pages we have set aside for "Letters to the Editor."

Here are actual letters from February 2007

Does Anyone
Remember The NYA?

Dear Editor:
Does anyone remember the NYA (National Youth Administration)? This program was similar to the CCCs, except it was for youths.
I worked for the NYA at the Louisville Public Library in 1938. I was paid about $16 per month.
I would like to hear from others who belonged to the NYA.

Wants Photos Of George's Creek
Elementary School

Dear Editor:
I am searching for photos of the one-room George's Creek Elementary School near the community of Tadpole, Lawrence County, Kentucky. I would like photos of the buildings, teachers, students, or events anyone might have to share. The school ceased to exist sometime in the 1960s, I believe. Over the years it was housed in three different buildings, the first being located near the George's Creek train station. The school was relocated later about one mile to accommodate more students. A new typical wooden school building was constructed like all rural schools in Lawrence County. I attended this school from 1933 through 1941. This building later burned, and a new block building replaced it.
I would be happy to reimburse anyone for expenses incurred.
In September 2006 the George's Creek School Reunion was held at the Senior Citizens Building in Louisa, Kentucky. It was a wonderful occasion and was enjoyed by many former students.
I have been a subscriber to The Kentucky Explorer for many years and enjoy it so much.

Researching Town Of Nada
In Powell County

Dear Editor:
I am researching the history of the small town of Nada in Powell County, Kentucky. It was also known as Lombard.
If readers have any information or pictures they would like to share, I would be very grateful.
I would also like to purchase a copy of the book The Hanks Family of Virginia and Westward by Adin Baber.
Thanks for such an amazing magazine. Keep up the good work.
