Reader Queries

Each month, The Kentucky Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from our faithful readers. Among those letters we often find queries, ranging from requests for words to songs and poems to trying to locate former classmates and military buddies of long ago.

Here are a few queries from June 2006

Researching John S. Shropshire
Dear Editor:
I have recently been researching Harrison and Bourbon counties, as I have ancestors who received Revolutionary War pensions in the 1830s from that area of Kentucky. Among the families are Zela Reno, Chinn, and Shropshire. I believe them all to be early settlers of Kentucky.
I have found many articles on Major John Samuel Shropshire, CSA, who was reinterred in Bourbon County, Kentucky, after his remains were found in New Mexico. I'm sure readers are familiar with this history. One article states that he was buried next to his parents. I would like to know the name of the cemetery and the names of his parents.
I have found many helpful genealogy sites on Kentucky families. I am unable to link this man to his parents.
Any help would be appreciated.

Old Stacy School Class
Photo Wanted
Dear Editor:
I am trying to locate an old Stacy School class photo (now Rowdy, Perry County, Kentucky). The photo was taken between the years 1915-1918, to the best of my knowledge. Velma Allen Stacy is shown in the photo. She was the daughter of Sam Derby Allen. Others possibly in the photo are: John Morgan Allen, at approximately ten years of age; Margaret Louise Allen, at about nine years of age; and hopefully Florence Allen, at about seven years of age. Florence died at 16 and this may be the only picture in existence of her.
My mother, Mary V. Allen Potts Noble, is 94 years old and wants to find this photo again. She last saw the photo at her cousin's (Velma and Estill Stacy) home. She remembers that in the photo John and Margaret Allen were standing next to each other and Margaret was the only one with long hair in a pig-tail.
Any information would be appreciated.
