A Mountain Wedding

A Mountain Wedding. Kentucky weddings have changed greatly since pioneer days. Usually, the first impression of love generally resulted in marriage, and a family establishment cost but a little labor and nothing else. The wedding day was a special day, allowing friends and neighbors to come together for dancing, working, and socializing. At the end of the day the new couple was often presented a new home built that very day. The photo above was of a wedding party at the head of Smoot Creek in Letcher County, Kentucky in 1884. If anyone knows the identifications of the families, please contact The Kentucky Explorer, P. O. Box 227, Jackson, KY 41339; or [email protected]
