Virginia Militia

"Virginia Militia in the War of 1812" is a two-volume work containing the names of some 40,000 Virginia militiamen. The first volume was originally published in 1851 by the Virginia Auditor's Office; and the second, much larger, volume was published a year later as a "supplement."

Copied from rolls in the Auditor's Office at Richmond, the two volumes have identical formats: both are arranged by company, under which are columns which give the soldier's name, rank, the time of his service in months and days, and a final "Remarks" columns; which sometimes provides alternate readings of the soldier's name, names of substitutes, and service notes, including such details as whether the soldier was discharged, transferred, or had deserted.

The volumes have 557 pages and 989 pages and is indexed with a cloth cover. The price of these books is $125. Shipping rates for these books are for U. S. rates, $3.50 for the first book (or volume of a set) and $1.25 for each additional book (or each additional volume of a set); or UPS Ground Service rates are $5 for the first book and $2 for each additional book.

It describes in great detail the location of each country's archives (national and municipal); the location of church records and census returns; the system of civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths; and how to find and use such records as foundling books, orphans' lists, certificates of domicile, guild records, internal passports, confirmation records, and even vaccination lists.
