Breathitt County's Frozen Hill, 1940

Perhaps the most famous part of Highway 15 in 1929 was the Frozen Mountain in Breathitt County. The road actually made three steep curves down the side of the hill and motorists could look down and see the other two parts of the winding road. In this photo, made in 1930, two cars and two wagons are shown on the middle section of the mountain. At this time the road was still graveled. When new Highway 15 was built in the early 1960s, this famous landmark was bypassed, but it remains as part of Highway 1812.
