Thee Pigg & Family, Laurel County, Late 1920s

Editor's Note: In last month's issue on this page we featured a reunion photo taken by Thee Pigg. We have had a couple of inquiries concerning this early photographer and are pleased to share the following letter sent in by a reader, Ernest E. Fields, 253 Anderson Road, Georgetown, KY 40324.

Mr. Fields writes, "In the February 2001 Explorer there is a picture at the bottom of page 2. George Robinson of Fairfield, Ohio, requested more information about the picture. He says the photographer was Thee Pigg, who happened to be a brother of my mother. So I am enclosing a picture of that Pigg family. Not present was John Pigg, who was well known at London, Kentucky, where he was a deputy county clerk for many years.

"The names, left to right are: Emma Pigg Nelly, Elisa Pigg Mathis, Dora Pigg Fields, George Pigg, and Thee Pigg. All of these lived in Laurel County, near East Bernstadt, except Thee who lived in Rockcastle County. This picture was made with Thee's camera. This picture dates from the late 1920s. Mr. Pigg would walk along U.S. Highway 25 from his place in Rockcastle County to East Bernstadt in Laurel County, carrying his tripod on his shoulder and his camera case in his hand. That was about 20 miles.

"One woman I know, Edith Evans, tells about seeing Thee when she was about eight years old, walking along U.S. 25. That long, white beard frightened her and the other children. She says they would run inside the house and watch from the window until he passed.

"I guess Edith Evans never suspected she would one day marry a nephew of that old man, but she did. We were married July 25, 1941."
