Teacher & Students Riding Mules To School

Riding the mules are (l-r): Miss Crosby, teacher; John Slusher; Sally Sizemore; Winston Bowling; Jack Gilbert; and Helen Gilbert. Big Creek Institute was located in Manchester, Clay County, Kentucky. The nearest public high school was at Manchester, 16 miles away, and there were no highways. Big Creek Institute opened with 50 students, including five high school students.
