Fort Duffield was active all through the war. There were no battles or skirmishes on the hill, except for one. It was the first night of encampment at the fort. A sentinel claimed he saw something by a stump, aimed his gun, and began firing. It turned out to be nothing but an axe handle sticking out of a tree stump. This was the view of West Point in May 1999 from the sentry's lookout position at Fort Duffield. The only human casualty: a sergeant ripped the seat of his britches. |
